I am lucky enough to be the Vice Chair of our Trust Disability Staff Networking Group which is known as CAN: Croydon Ability Network. You can follow us on Twitter @ChsForum
I work closely with our CAN Chair and Trust Company Secretary, Helen Potton, our Occupational Health Lead, Iain Docherty, our EDI team and colleagues from across the Trust
Thursday 3rd December 2020 was the International Day of People With Disabilities
To mark the day and to celebrate UK Disability History Month 2020 which runs from 18th November until 18th December, CAN facilitated a Trust-wide panel discussion on the topics of how CAN and Croydon Health Services NHS Trust are:
- raising awareness of disability
- supporting staff with dyslexia via our Dyslexia Champions programme
- offering deaf awareness training
- supporting staff mental health via trained Mental Health First Aiders
- supporting staff with disabilities with reasonable adjustments
- carrying out disability awareness training
The event was chaired by our Joint Chief Financial Officer and CAN Executive sponsor Mike Sexton.
Our Trust Chief Executive and Place Based Leader for Health, Matthew Kershaw, attended and supported the event.
Mike gave a fascinating introduction to the afternoon, including highlighting the history of UK Disability Month and the relevance of the UKDHM logo. This really resonated with me and I wanted to share it. The inverted black triangle (UKDHM logo) is of historical significance. Disabled people were forced to wear this symbol by the Nazis during the ‘T4′ Eugenics Programme; which was intended to eliminate them. The UKDHM Logo has taken this symbol and inverted it.
As a Mental Health First Aid Trainer and a Volunteer Crisis Counsellor with Shout 85258 I am so pleased to support our staff alongside my colleagues across the disability spectrum of hidden and visible disabilities
This workstream supports Trust objectives and the HEE Quality Improvement Outcomes Framework (QIOF)
In particular, Library and Knowledge Service (LKS) input into this workstream helps my service to support the Trust to:
Improve Health and Reduce Inequalities
It also supports QIOF domains
Outcome 1: All NHS organisations enable their workforce to freely access proactive library and knowledge services that meet organisational priorities within the framework of Knowledge for Healthcare
Outcome 6: Library and knowledge specialists demonstrate that their services make a positive impact on healthcare
We are working hard to mobilise this and other evidence within our Trust using the knowledge mobilisation framework elearning techniques of learning before, learning during and learning after to support our Trust objectives and the QIOF
LKS and CAN have worked together to purchase and make available a selection of books about Disability
This is part of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Collection, which also contains a collection of books exploring race and ethnicity which we promoted during Black History Month and purchased collaboratively with CHS BAME Staff Networking Group.
I wonder if you saw the Black History Month 2020: Let’s talk about race – our stories video produced by CHS BAME Networking Group? It’s well worth a watch, along with other videos on the CHS YouTube channel
I am looking forward to adding to our equality, diversity and inclusion collection with books chosen by our LGBTQ+ Staff Networking Group and our Religion & Belief Networking Group.
